General Structure of Comedy and the Importance of Being Earnest by Osca

General Structure of Comedy and the Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde GeneralStructure of Comedy: * Things start out badly and end well * The deeper aim is broadly social: the kingdom or other city space is at first badly ruled or in turmoil for some reason--perhaps the values and institutions of the citizens and/or rulers are in need of some re-examination. * Next, the main characters leave (willingly or otherwise) the city setting and wind up in the countryside, in a pastoral setting. This setting allows for the necessary re-examination of values and social roles. * Magical transformations of characters occur; they are put in situations that could not occur in the city or the kingdom; the forest or countryside's magic opens up new possibilities to them. * After this reappraisal and readjustment period has been completed, the main characters come together--the young by marriage, the foundational institution of the civil order and its only hope for regeneration. * Finally, the characters return to the "kingdom" proper or are about to return when the play ends. Comedy of Manners: This kind of comedy is the one that best describes The Importance of Being Earnest. English comedies deal with "the relations and intrigues of men and women living in a polished and sophisticated society, relying for comic effect in great part on the wit and sparkle of the dialogue--often in the form of repartee, a witty conversational give-and-take which constitutes a kind of verbal fencing match--and to a lesser degree, on the ridiculous violations of social conventions and decorum by stupid characters such as would-be-wits, jealous husbands, and foppish dandies." The Impor... ...y ideal to love someone by the name of Ernest." One view among critics is that Wilde is saying that marriage based on class by birthright is no less stupid that marriage based on something else a baby cannot control: say, his name. In the play many other examples occur of things that cannot be controlled but people act as if they could be: "Some aunts are tall, some aunts are not tall. That is surely a matter that an aunt may be allowed to decide for herself." "I think it is high time that Mr Bunbury made up his mind whether he was to live or die." The play also trivialises other things, like religion, death, customs and manners, etc. For instance, when Algy tells his Aunt Augusta that his friend Bunbury died when his doctors told him he could not possibly live, her only concern is that he acted under the proper medical advice of his physician.

Language Barriers

Language barriers can impede the educational progress of minorities. The United States is facing the challenge of language barriers in the way of educational progress of minorities. There are approximately 3.5 million children who are not proficient in English language due to their different native language. The United States has received maximum number of new arrivals in 1960s. these arrivals included refugees, illegal and legal immigrants and migrants. As a result, number of enrolled students increased significantly and a large number of new comers were admitted in the public schools of the United States. These newly enrolled students were from different nations so they were proficient in their native languages but their proficiency level regarding English language was very low or none. There were not/hardly able to speak English. To overcome this challenge, several educational policies, and legislation and court decisions were made (Berman et al, 1992). The Bilingual Education Act of 1968, Title VII of the Elementary and Secondary Act was the first step that was taken to overcome the challenge of language barrier. The purpose of this Act was to make sure that all the Mexican American children learn to speak English to an extent that can enable them to actively participate in their educational activities. The role of this Act was later expanded to overcome the language barrier of all non-English speaking children. It is shown in Chavez, (1991, p. 11-12): â€Å"It is not the purpose of the bill to create pockets of different languages through the country †¦ but just to try to make those children fully literate in English†. Several steps were taken to overcome the language barrier. The purpose of all the steps was to enable all non-English speaking children to speak English fluently. An example of such as decision was made in Lau v. Nichols (1974) when the United States Supreme Court declared that every non-English speaking child has got the right to get special assistance in learning English. It stated: There is no equality of treatment merely by providing students with the same facilities, textbooks, teachers, and curriculum; for students who do not understand English are effectively foreclosed from any meaningful education. †¦ Teaching English to the students of Chinese ancestry who do not speak the language is one choice. Giving instruction to the group in Chinese is another. There may be others. (Chavez, 1991, pp. 14-15) A large number of Limited English Proficient students are enrolling in the 10th grade test. It was also found that the number of Hispanic high school graduates was very less all over the country. This was due to large number of students who were dropped out of the school. Although there have been several efforts to improve the English language of non-English speaking students specially Hispanic students but it is found that despite all these efforts, the drop out rate of Hispanic students has not decreased to a significant extent (Hispanic Dropout Project, 1998). Conclusion English language learners are usually exempted from appearing in the assessments that are done for native English speakers. It is quite unfair because non-English speaking students are left behind. It is suggested that non-English speakers should also be allowed to appear in the same assessment programs that are done for English speakers. This will help the non-English speakers to get out of the feeling of left out and they will progress a breast with native English speakers. Mysterious Setting Of The Cask of Amontillado - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 505 Downloads: 2 Date added: 2019/06/13 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: The Cask of Amontillado Essay Did you like this example? In The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe, I find it very interesting because of the setting and the way Montresorrs scheme was planned. The problem in the short story is the Montresor was unable to manage the situation and insult about his last name that Fortunato had said. The setting of The Cask of Amontillado is mysterious. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Mysterious Setting Of The Cask of Amontillado" essay for you Create order The setting is important because it has an emotional effect on the reader. Montresor took his revenge to far over a little insult. The plan for Montresorrs revenge went really far. He developed a very well thought plan and it was terrible idea for the little insult that he had received. He had set the plan up perfectly. He knew what would lure Fortunato in, Montresor used something Fortunato loved to get his revenge. Instead of talking with him, Montresor went his own way, the hard way by planning a murder without being caught. The way the scheme was planned had a lot of thought put into it but Montresor never put a different idea on how he could get over the issue. He assumed murder was the best option but it didnt solve anything it would have created more problems. In The Cask of Amontillado the setting was important because it made the story have an emotional effect meaning it put fear into the story and it made it seem fearful. The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre. The setting describes southern gothic literature. It is mysterious and violent events had happened. In the beginning of the short story Montresor approaches Fortunato, while Fortunato dressed like a jester which was odd but they were at a carnival. The way Montresor lured him to his house he was able to know no one was home to be suspicious. Montresor took kinda took advantage of Fortunato by knowing his love of wine. Knowing what he likes and cant say no to, was the easy way to get his revenge started and took the matter seriously. It doesnt make sense to why he killed him over the insult. The final moments of conversation between Montresor and Fortunato heighten the horror and suggest that Fortunato ultimately and ironically achieves some type of upper hand over Montresor. Montresor had given Fortunato to turn back before they reached the end because Fortunato had been coughing but he said Enough, the coughrs a mere nothing;it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough. therefore Fortunato had the chance to save his life he just chose not to take it. In conclusion Montresor took his revenge too far by murdering someone. He could have handled the situation differently by talking to him about of just forget about it. This tells the reader that you can only conclude that in Montresor Family, death is way of punishment for being insulted or threatened. He claims that he has borne a thousand injuries from Fortunato, but he does not go into detail about what these supposed injuries actually are.

Biography of Mother Jones, Labor Organizer and Agitator

Mother Jones (born Mary Harris; 1837–November 30, 1930) was a key radical figure in United States labor history. She was a fiery orator, a union agitator for mine workers, and a co-founder of the International Workers of the World (IWW). The current-day political magazine Mother Jones was named for her and maintains her legacy of left-wing politics. Fast Facts: Mother Jones Known For:  Radical political activist, orator, organizer of mine worker union, co-founder of the International Workers of the WorldAlso Known As:  Mother of All Agitators. the Miners Angel, Mary Harris, Mary Harris JonesBorn:  c. August 1, 1837 (although she claimed May 1, 1830 as her birth date) in County Cork, IrelandParents: Mary Harris and Robert HarrisDied:  November 30, 1930 in Adelphi, MarylandEducation: Toronto Normal SchoolPublished Works:  The New Right, Letter of Love and Labor, Autobiography of Mother JonesSpouse: George JonesChildren: Four children (all of whom died in a yellow fever epidemic)Notable Quote: In spite of oppressors, in spite of false leaders, in spite of labor’s own lack of understanding of its needs, the cause of the worker continues onward. Slowly his hours are shortened, giving him leisure to read and to think. Slowly, his standard of living rises to include some of the good and beautiful things of the world. Slowly the cause of his ch ildren becomes the cause of all....Slowly those who create wealth of the world are permitted to share it.  The future is in labor’s strong, rough hands. Early Life Born Mary Harris in 1837 in County Cork, Ireland, young Mary Harris was the daughter of Mary Harris and Robert Harris.  Her father worked as a hired hand and the family lived on the estate where he worked. The family followed Robert Harris to America, where he had fled after taking part in a revolt against the landowners. The family then moved to Canada, where Mary went to public school. Work and Family Harris became a schoolteacher first in Canada, where, as a Roman Catholic, she could only teach in the parochial schools. She moved to Maine to teach as a private tutor and then to Michigan, where she got a teaching job in a convent. Harris then moved to Chicago and worked as a dressmaker. After two years, she moved to Memphis to teach and met George Jones in 1861. They married and had four  children.  George was an iron moulder and also worked as a union organizer. During their marriage, he began working full-time in his union job. George Jones and all four children died in a yellow fever epidemic in Memphis, Tennessee, in September and October 1867. Begins Organizing After the death of her family, Mary Harris Jones moved to Chicago, where she returned to work as a dressmaker. Mary claimed that her pull to the labor movement increased when she sewed for wealthy Chicago families. I would look out of the plate glass windows and see the poor, shivering wretches, jobless and hungry, walking alongside the frozen lake front....The tropical contrast of their condition with that of the tropical comfort of the people for whom I sewed was painful to me. My employers seemed neither to notice nor to care. Tragedy struck Jones life again in 1871. She lost her home, shop, and belongings in the Great Chicago Fire. She had already connected with the secretive workers organization Knights of Labor and was active in speaking for the group and organizing. After the fire, she left her dressmaking to take up full-time organizing with the Knights. Increasingly Radical By the mid-1880s, Mary Jones had left the Knights of Labor, finding them too conservative. She became involved in more radical organizing by 1890. A fiery orator, she spoke at the location of strikes around the country. She helped coordinate hundreds of strikes, including those with coal miners in Pennsylvania in 1873 and railroad workers in 1877. She was named often in newspapers as Mother Jones, a white-haired radical labor organizer in her signature black dress, lace collar, and plain head covering. Mother Jones was a loving moniker given her by workers, grateful for her care of and devotion to working people. United Mine Workers and Wobblies Mother Jones principally worked with the United Mine Workers, although her role was unofficial. Among other activist actions, she helped organize strikers wives.  Often ordered to stay away from miners, she refused to do so and frequently challenged the armed guards to shoot her. Mother Jones focused on the issue of child labor as well. In 1903, Mother Jones led a childrens march from Kensington, Pennsylvania, to New York to protest child labor to President Roosevelt. In 1905, Mother Jones was among the founders of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW, the Wobblies). She worked within the political system as well, and was a founder of the Social Democratic Party in 1898. Later Years In the 1920s, as rheumatism made it more difficult for her to get around, Mother Jones wrote her Autobiography of Mother Jones. Famed lawyer Clarence Darrow wrote an introduction to the book. Mother Jones became less active as her health failed. She moved to Maryland and lived with a retired couple. Death One of her last public appearances was at a birthday celebration on May 1, 1930, when she claimed to be 100. (May 1 is the international labor holiday in most of the world.) This birthday was celebrated at workers events around the country. Mother Jones died on November 30 of that year. She was buried at the Miners Cemetery at Mount Olive, Illinois, at her request: It was the only cemetery owned by a union. Legacy Mother Jones was once labeled the most dangerous woman in America by a U.S. district attorney. Her activism left a strong mark on U.S. labor history. The 2001 biography by Elliott Gorn has added significantly to the details known of Mother Jones life and work. The radical political magazine Mother Jones is named for her and she remains a symbol for passionate labor activism. Sources Gorn, Elliott J. Mother Jones: The Most Dangerous Woman in America. Basic Input / Output System - 1966 Words

Task 1 Processor: A Processor or CPU (Central processing unit) is a chip that is housed in the mother boards CPU socket; some may say that this is the heart of the computer. It is a control circuit that pull data from various parts and directs them along data busses as packets of data but also can do calculations. The CPU also uses the Ram of the PC to store data. Motherboard: This is a printed circuit board or PCB that is the most important part of the PC, this is because every component is attached to this key part, and its size and shape determines how fast and how may additional parts the pc can house. BIOS: Basic input/output system is a collection of software utility’s that create parts of the OS system. This usually takes the form of a ROM chip that comes with the PC called a ROM BIOS. But what does the BIOS actually do? The BIOS allows the computer to boot up and allows it to configurator data, as well as check to see if hardware is working properly. The BIOS also allows the OS to use some specific features and handles input and output from the PC. The BIOS will never disappear in the event of a power failure because it is stored on the ROM. Hard drive configuration and controllers: the hard drive is where all saved data from the user is stored on a disc. A hard disc drive are IDE devices controlled by an IDE controller, which there are two kinds; primary, this is where the HDD is normally attached and secondary where a CD/DVD drive is normally attached. The management ensured that the workers knew the importance of team work, coordination and effective use of the available materials for the betterment of the project. Have a project brief, scope, objectives and goals aligned. These were all set and the management made sure that all the employees followed and worked towards their achievement. They were therefore able to reduce the cost of production and improve the quality of the project at the end of the period. Have the projects organization and structure. By having this, the management was in a position to exercise its authority because of the line of power that was adhered to. Have a project initiation document. Design a risk management strategy. Should be able to identify the risks associated with the project and be in a position to solve them whenever they occur. E.g. negotiating with suppliers, budgeting problems among others. Plan on how to manage and run the project as a whole. The management was able to run the project with the help of frequent reports and supervisions that it conducted. The project is to be closed or ended when it comes to the end period. However it has to have realized the benefits that it was meant to realize i.e. achieved its objectives, goals and responsibilities to the society, employees and employers as well. This is becomes possible when there are evaluations done at the end of the project period and a report produced by the management to the project board to ensure that it has achieved the desired benefits. This is done especially during a closure meeting. There must be a project checklist to counter check the projects quality, dependence and effectiveness according to its purpose. Therefore, if the projects goes by the rules and expectations of the checklist, its objectives and goals and all the other expectations of the board then it is said to be justifiable. Timmins F.
